Taranath Kapikad, journalist, said on Wednesday that the Kannada television news channels in the State had lost sensitivity.

Speaking at the World Television Day celebrations organised by the Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association, here, Mr. Kapikad said that the Kannada news channels were moving in the wrong direction.

They were busy chasing Target Rating Points (TRPs). This was because the “initial grammar” of the Kannada news channels was wrong and nothing had been done to set that right.

Many were wary of journalists working in Kannada news channels.

‘Respect privacy’

The Kannada news channels and the journalists working in them should learn to respect the privacy of individuals.

“Private lives of people should be respected,” he said.

TRPs have become the sole factor deciding the fate of stories in the news channels, which had lost sensitivity and nothing was being done to stem the rot.

“Though there was a lot of talk about self-regulation, there has been no progress on that front,” he said.

“Many a time, wrong news was run in the scrolls of news channels under ‘Breaking News’,” he said.

Questions were being raised on whether “sting reports” done by television channels was journalism at all, he said. M. Jhunjanna, District Information Officer, and office-bearers of the District Working Journalists Association, were present.
