Kannada meet to be held in Shanivarasante on January 20 and 21
Poets’ meet involving students to be organised
Madikeri: President of the Kodagu District Kannada Sahitya Parishat T.P. Ramesh said here on Wednesday that the parishat was organising the seventh Kodagu district sammelan at Shanivarasante in Kodagu on January 20 and 21 with a view to popularising Kannada literature in remote and rural areas of the district.
Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Ramesh said writer, M.G. Nagaraj would preside over the sammelan. He would be taken in an open jeep in a procession to the Bharati Vidya Samste and GMP School grounds, the venue of the function.
Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture Manu Baligar would inaugurate the sammelan.
‘Sahitya Saptami’, a souvenir would be launched by Subraya Chokkadi, writer from Sullia.
The aim of the parishat was to spread awareness among the people on the need to foster Kannada in every nook and corner of the district. Mr. Ramesh said all that greatest writers in Kannada had emerged from the rural background in the past and efforts to organise Kannada programmes in a small town such as Shanivarasante would aptly serve the cause of Kannada. A large number of people were expected to take part since Shanivarasante bordered Hassan district.
Seminars on the issues relating to farmers, labourers and agriculturists, were the novelty in the seminars, Mr. Ramesh said. A poet’s meet involving children studying from VIII to X standards would be another special feature of the sammelan. Cultural programmes would comprise 26 troupes drawn from different parts of the district. D. Manjunath, president of the Shimoga District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, would inaugurate the cultural programmes on January 20.
Replying to a question on whether a section of the people in Shanivarasante was not happy with the preparations for the sammelan on the grounds that they were not involved, Mr. Ramesh said he had appealed to all sections of the people to cooperate with the parishat for ensuring its success.
The presidents of eight gram panchayats under the Shanivarasante hobli would be inaugurating various art troupes that would accompany the procession in the morning.
