The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the Digambar Kamat Government for sidelining the Goa Assembly House Committee set up to study the problems associated with the alignment of the national highways widening project and clear the same.
Addressing presspersons after a meeting of BJP's State Legislature Party here on Friday, Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar criticised Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for not convening even one meeting of the committee since it was set up three months ago.
“I will not allow the Government to belittle the House Committee. The Government must come to the committee before any decision is taken on the problem,” Mr. Parrikar said. He denied that the BJP was per se opposed to widening of the highways. “We are opposed to the present alignment. We support the demand of the National Highway Diversion Action Committee (NHDAC) to take the alignment through hinterland, and want the Government to be transparent and take the House Committee into confidence before taking any important decision,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NHDAC on Friday reiterated its resolve to go ahead with its agitation to press for its demand and announced that it would hold a public meeting in Margao, south Goa, the Assembly constituency of Mr. Kamat, on Monday.
