Madikeri: The late P. Kalinga Rao had carved a niche for himself in the field of light music in the State, president of the Kodagu District Kannada Sahitya Parishat T.P. Ramesh has said.

He was addressing a gathering at Kushalnagar at the valedictory of the light music camp organised to remember the veteran singer.

The camp was organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture, Suddi Centre, Kannada Siri Kalavrinda and Kushalnagar unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, an official press release said here on Saturday.

Mr. Ramesh stated that Kalinga Rao had enthralled music lovers in the State for many decades, and the programme to train the youth and popularise light music among the present generation was laudable.

Honorary general secretary of the parishat B.A. Shamsuddin said that music could be enjoyed only if one could comprehend it.

Other speakers included industrialist B.R. Nagendraprasad and V.N. Vasant Kumar from Kushalnagar, the press release said.

Noted singer Yashwant Halabandi and Assistant Director of the Kannada and Culture Department Damodar were present.
