TUMKUR: Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam visited the Kalpataru Vidya Samsthe’s administrative block in Tiptur town on his way to Bangalore on Friday. The Vidya Samsthe’s chairman, N. Basavaiah, and its treasurer, B.R. Viswanath, received Dr. Kalam on his arrival at 1.10 pm.

About 150 students — from pre-primary to postgraduate level — from the Vidya Samste’s 20 institutions, welcomed him.

Addressing the students, Dr. Kalam said, “India will become a super economic power by 2020. The process has begun. You have a role to play in it.” He told the teachers to inculcate humility among the youth. “It is only the parents and the teachers who can do it,” he said.

Dr. Kalam showed interest in the curriculum of Kalpataru Institute of Technology. Mr. Viswanath, who is also the president of the Tiptur Copra Merchants Association, briefed Dr. Kalam about the commercial importance of Tiptur. He was informed that the Tiptur variety of copra was in demand all over the world. Dr. Kalam said he would like to visit Tiptur for the Vidya Samsthe’s golden jubilee celebrations.
