‘Police failed to heed reports on

the possibility

of violence in Shimoga'

SHIMOGA: State Janata Dal (Secular) vice-president P.R. Srinivas has called for a probe by a retired judge of the Supreme Court into the violence that rocked Shimoga recently.

In a press release, he alleged that “the police appeared to have overlooked the warning of the Intelligence Department”.

Mr. Srinivas said that the district administration and the police had failed in following the intelligence reports on the possibility of untoward incidents, that too on Holi. He criticised the lack of coordination between the district administration and higher officials in Bangalore in handling the situation. Maintaining that the imposition of curfew in the aftermath of the incidents was needless, he said that when violence erupted in Shimoga in 1967curfew was not imposed. He also demanded a judicial probe into the firing.
