Terming the arrest of a TV reporter in connection with the Mangalore homestay attack as undemocratic, authoritarian and transgression on the freedom of the press, hundreds of journalists staged a protest in front of Town Hall here Thursday.
The protesters demanded the immediate release of Kasturi channel reporter Naveen Soorinje, arrested by Mangalore police late on Wednesday, and urged authorities to withdraw all charges against him.
A memorandum submitted to Home Minister R. Ashok demanded strict action against officers responsible for booking Mr. Soorinje. It was jointly submitted by Bangalore Press Club, Bangalore Reporters’ Guild, and Karnataka Union of Working Journalists. It accused the police of failing to stop the attack on a birthday party despite being tipped off and of trying to turn the reporter into a scapegoat to cover up their failure.
