A journalist with the monthly magazine Hai Udupi was allegedly beaten up by the activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other Hindutva organiations at Kemmannu near here on Friday. The Malpe police said on Saturday that the journalist, Prakash Poojary, was taking photographs, when these activists came on 20 motorcycles, threatened him and beat him up. They asked him why he was writing about Hindu organisations and the recent rave party at St. Mary's Island. They accused him of taking money from other political parties to write these stories. When Mr. Poojary tried to call his friends on his mobile phones, the group seized them.
They beat him up again and kept him in captivity for nearly four hours.
When Mr. Poojary pretended to have fainted and fell on the ground, the group left him saying they would keep an eye on him.
A case has been registered. Mr. Poojary is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
