DC expresses anguish over non-payment of wages

Officials may be issued legal notice

KOLAR: Deputy Commissioner N. Prabhakar warned on Thursday that action would be initiated against officials concerned, including taluk panchayat Executive Officer A. Manjunath and secretaries of 10 gram panchayats which had not paid wages to the workers under MGREGA since long time.

Mr. Prabhakar convened a meeting of officials and leaders of REGA Implementation Committee, which has organised an indefinite dharna since March 1 demanding payment of wage arrears.

Mr. Prabhakar reportedly expressed anguish at the apathy of officials for not clearing payment to workers.

He directed zilla panchayat chief executive officer G.V. Ranga Rao to solve the problem by March 12 by paying all the arrears by demand drafts.

REGA committee leaders Narayanswami, T.M. Venkatesh, V. Geetha, P.R. Suryanarayan and Vijayakrishna attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, Kolar District Legal Services Authority too took serious note about the sufferings of the workers. The authority is likely to issue notices to the errant officials, it is learnt.
