Excise Minister and district in-charge Satish L. Jarkiholi has proposed to prepare a comprehensive plan for the development of infrastructure in Belgaum.

He was speaking at a meeting with officials of various departments and the public on Visvesvaraya Technological University’s Jnana Sangama campus at Machche, 11 km from the city, on Tuesday.

The Minister said that regular drinking water supply, underground drainage lines, good roads, houses for the needy, better traffic regulation systems with construction of ring road, establishment of industrial areas and improvement in supply of electricity would be incorporated in the plan.

However, a proper master plan needs to be in place for the comprehensive and systematic development of the city, he said.

Mr. Jarkiholi said Belgaum was poised to grow as the second capital of the State. The objective of the plan was to move in this direction, he said. The Minister invited suggestions from experts and social workers and said he would request the Chief Minister to lead a delegation to the Centre and seek additional funds for development works. The State government had already sent a Rs. 217-crore proposal to implement the 24x7 drinking water supply project in 48 of the 58 wards. Mr. Jarkiholi pointed out that no housing site had been distributed by the Belgaum Urban Development Authority during the last seven years. He promised to commence the process of distribution at the earliest.

Suresh C. Angadi, MP; Feroz N. Sait, MLA; Sanjay B. Patil, MLA; Sambhaji Patil, MLA; Mahantesh Kaujalgi, MLC; N. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner; Deepa Cholan, Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat; and Sandeep Patil, Superintendent of Police, were present.
