GULBARGA: Agricultural Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur on Saturday stressed the need to revive folk arts.

Inaugurating the District Level Janapada Convention here, Mr. Darshanapur said it was unfortunate that not much attention was given to protect the rich cultural heritage of the past.

Most of the folk arts were disappearing owing to people's neglect and also because of advent of other forms of music, he said.

He lauded the efforts of the Janapada and Yakshagana Academy for conducting such conventions and melas to revive folk arts and generate interest in people.

Reader in the Gulbarga University, Veeranna Dande, delivered a special lecture on the status of folk arts in the Hyderabad Karnataka region.

Academy chairman Kelemani Shambu Hegde spoke on the occasion. Shashil G. Namoshi, MLC, was present.
