The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has extended support to Congress candidate S.R. Morey contesting from the Hubli-Dharwad West Assembly segment.

In a press release issued here, IUML State president Nirza Mohammad Mehdi said the league had not entered into an electoral alliance with any party in the State; but it had fielded its candidates in select constituencies. It had decided to support Mr. Morey to defeat communal forces in the constituency, he said.

Mr. Mehdi said Mr. Morey was a leader known for his secular credentials and service to society. Keeping in mind that the constituency had a significant number of Muslim voters, IUML decided to support Mr. Morey to avoid division of Muslim votes, he said.

He said IUML harboured reservations over the Congress’s policy towards minority communities; even Muslim leaders in the Congress had long ignored the welfare of their community. However, Mr. Morey was an exception. He had promised to safeguard the interests of the Muslim community if voted to power, he said.
