The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that in a situation where politicians were being looked at with suspicion, it had become imperative to mend one's way of functioning before pointing a finger at others.

He was addressing a gathering of Bunts here on Sunday after inaugurating the anniversary celebrations of the Hubli-Dharwad Bunts' Association in the presence of Gurudevanand Swami of Guru Devadatta Samsthanam in Odiyuru of Dakshina Kannada district.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said that at a time when everyone was building castles in the air, persons who try to present the reality get misquoted and end up becoming “villains”. He repeated his statement that if Gandhiji were to live today he would have either quit politics or would have been forced to compromise.

Referring to the earlier speaker's statement that “Vokkaligas and Bunts were the same”, he said it had become necessary for all communities to protect and preserve their culture.

Appreciating the “fighting spirit” among the Bunts, which had now taken them to several countries across the globe and made them successful, he said that the community had converted a challenge posed before it after the implementation of the Land Reforms Act into an opportunity.

The former Chief Minister released Bantara Dhwani , a magazine brought by the association.
