Director says the film is about the life of senior actors in Kannada industry

With the trend in celluloid of turning “real” characters in to “reel” ones catching up, Sandalwood (colloquial reference to Kannada film industry) is not lagging behind. The Kannada film industry has churned out a few biopics in recent days, including Cyanide — based on story of Sivarasan and Shubha, masterminds behind the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by director A.M.R. Ramesh; Attahasa — -based on the life of forest brigand Veerappan again by the same director; Silk Sakkat Hot Maga of Trishul — based on the life of popular south Indian actor Silk Smitha; Dandupalya of Srinivasaraju based on the infamous criminal gang that had created terror in the minds of people in and around Bangalore.

Now, director Satish Pradhan is launching his project Abhinetri with a tagline — “The tragedy of a legend”. The film is being jointly produced by Pooja Gandhi, who recently contested the Assembly elections, albeit unsuccessfully.

The eight-page brochure and the tagline drops strong indication that the upcoming film is about yesteryear actor Kalpana, who ruled the Kannada film industry in the 80s. But, Mr. Pradhan refused to either confirm or deny when asked.

Though, the film crew confirms that the film is on life of Kalpana, protagonist of the film Pooja Gandhi is ambivalent. “This film is a tribute to all senior actors in the Kannada film industry,” she said.

Mr. Pradhan said that besides Ravishankar, Makarand Paranjape of Dandupalya , Atul Kulkarni is also essaying an important role in the film.

Minugu Taare

However, Abhinetri is being described as first of its kind attempt to portray life of an artiste in the 80-year-old Kannada film industry. Described as “Minugu Taare”, Kalpana, who died under mysterious circumstances, essayed a variety of roles in a style of her own. Her volatile temper and strong likes and dislikes, besides her remarkable acting talent made her one of the more discussed actors in the annals of Kannada cinema. Her forte was interpretation of complex and tragic roles.
