Gulbarga: Members of the Iranian community took out a procession in Gulbarga on Friday to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Mohammad and his followers, who were slain in Karbala about 1,400 years ago.

A large number of people, including women in burkhas, participated in the procession to mark Moharrum which will be observed on December 28.

President of the Irani Union Gulam Irani led the procession which began from the Irani Building at Tarfail locality in Gulbarga in the morning and reached Irani Masjid at Ghouse Nagar locality passing by Sardar Vallabhai Chowk.

The participants, in particular the youths, whipped themselves and inflicted injuries upon themselves. By way of inflicting injuries upon themselves, they recalled the sufferings of Hazrat Imam Husain and his 72 companions who were slain in Karbala.

“Tazia”, the religious symbol of the Muslims, which has been kept in specially erected pandals in different parts of the city, was taken around in a procession.

Gulam Irani said another procession would be taken out on December 27 from Irani Masjid and pass through different localities before returning the Masjid.

On December 28, the procession will begin from the Masjid and reach Sardar Vallabhbhai Chowk after passing through the main streets of the town.
