K. Jayaprakash Hegde, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP, on Saturday directed the officials to involve the villages in the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREG) scheme. He was chairing the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting here.

Mr. Hegde said that officials should ignore contractors and deal directly with villages while implementing works under the MGNREGS. The funds under the scheme could be provided for constructing individual toilets. There was now provision to use MP’s Local Area Development Scheme funds under the MGNREGS, he said.

Deputy Secretary Pranesh Rao said that there were 1.5 lakh small farmers in the district. It would be better if small agricultural operations related to coconut trees could be included under the MGNREGS. The meeting was toold that 1,606 houses had been sanctioned under the Indira Awaas Yojana.
