MYSORE: VeKare Ex-servicemen's Trust, Mysore, has made out a case for installation of a life-size bronze statue of the late Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa at the circle named after him in front of Hotel Metropole here.

They said that although the circle was named after the field marshal, it continued to be referred to as "Metropole Circle" or "Maharani's College Circle" even by the government authorities. In a statement, VKET president M.N. Subramani said there was not even a proper board announcing the name of the circle.

"The small and non-descript board in a remote corner of the circle should be replaced with a huge board at a prominent place in the circle," he said.

The Armed Forces fraternity and the public should prevail upon the Chief Minister to release funds for erecting a life-size bronze statue of the Field Marshal adjacent to the circle, he said. Mr Subramani said there could be no better tribute to the great Kannadiga soldier during the Suvarna Karnataka year than erecting a statue of his.

VKET has also urged the Mysore district administration to begin work on the construction of a war memorial, on a site measuring 40 ft. x 40 ft., adjacent to the Deputy Commissioner's office and opposite the NCC Group Headquarters' office.

Although land had been earmarked for it four years ago, no progress had been made in constructing the war memorial, it said.
