The meeting of the Hassan City Municipal Council here on Wednesday witnessed a heated debate over the purchase of 150 sodium vapour lamps.

While members of the Congress alleged that opposition members were discriminated against while allotting lamps, members of the ruling JD(S) ruled out any wrongdoing.

Yashavanth of the Congress and wanted to know where the lamps had been installed. “The wards represented by the Congress members have been neglected,” he said. “When I contacted an official, he said the Hassan MLA instructed to install all lamps on B.M. Road,” Mr. Yashavanth added.

However, H.S. Prakash, MLA, said he was unnecessarily being dragged into the controversy. This led to a heated debate between members of the JD(S) and the Congress.

Members of the Congress staged a protest demanding an inquiry into the purchase and installation of the lamps.

Meanwhile, JD(S) members also sought an inquiry into the purchase and distribution of water filters to hostels. Later, CMC president Srividya ordered an inquiry into both these issues.
