Governor H.R. Bhardwaj on Wednesday urged the Directorate of Distance Education in the country to evolve an effective model to propagate distance education. Mr. Bhardwaj, who is also Chancellor of the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), was presiding over a three-day international conference on ‘Open and distance learning in global environment: issues and challenges' here.

Ordinary forms of education would not serve the global purpose in view of fast-changing developments, Mr. Bhardwaj said, adding that E-education had made its way into almost every field.India was proud of its legacy in education but lagged behind in the application of technology, he noted.

Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) noted that a highly populated country like India needed a flexible style of education, which could be provided by open universities.
