Handicraft activities in both organised and unorganised sectors also to be covered
: The sixth Economic Census will be conducted under Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, across the country with enumeration of transgenders for the first time.
Sunil Jain, Deputy Director General/Economic Census Commissioner, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, said here on Tuesday that for the first time the census will enumerate transgenders and handicraft activities, both in the organised and unorganised sectors.
The field work for the sixth census will be conducted between July and October, 2013. After evaluating the 2007 census, the authorities included handicrafts, self-help groups as well as transgenders for the first time, Mr. Jain said.
Starting from 1997, five such censuses have been undertaken under the aegis of the Central Statistical Office (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
All units (establishments) engaged in production or distribution of goods or services other than for the sole purpose of own consumption will be counted. All establishments under agricultural and non-agricultural activities will be covered. However, in case of agriculture, establishments engaged in crop production and plantation will not be covered. In case of non-agricultural establishments, those engaged in public administration, defence, compulsory social security activities of households, activities of territorial organisations and gambling and betting activities which are declared illegal would not be covered.
