Two forest officials have been suspended for allowing illegal quarrying in Honnavar taluk.

Hanumanant Lingadagi, Deputy Range Forest Officer of Honnavar section, and Maruthi Bhandari, guard, Honnavar were suspended.

A special squad appointed by the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) led by R. Gokul, Conservator of Forest (Vigilance) had visited Uttara Kannada to check the illegal quarrying on the encroached forest land.

The squad had detected the illegal quarrying activity with the help of satellite pictures and Global Positioning System.

The squad had found that illegal mining was intense in Honnavar taluk. The committee had identified Hiregutti, Gopashitta and Karwar as the ranges where such activities were going on.

In Honnavar range, despite rampant quarrying and mining activities taking place for years not a single FIR had been filed.

The first FIR was, strangely, filed on the day the CEC squad visited the area.
