They were constructed on Railway land at Rajgopal Nagar

HUBLI: Railway staff demolished several unauthorised structures, including houses and petty shops, at Rajgopal Nagar here on Sunday with tight security.

The demolition drive began around 7.30 a.m. and ended at 1 p.m. There was no resistance from the residents of the area as Railway officials had informed them about the drive in advance. However, there was some resistance when workers started demolishing a school building and a temple. The residents urged the officials to give them some time to relocate the temple and to find another building for the school.

After a heated discussion, the officials agreed to their pleas. Official sources said that many houses and petty shops had been constructed illegally on the railway land at Rajgopal Nagar in the city.

The officials had issued demolition notice to the residents several times, but could not undertake the drive owing to some reasons, the sources said.
