It will be a comprehensive centre for honey production, says official

The proposal for setting up a Honey Park in Kodagu could materialise soon. A final decision would be taken after a meeting at the level of Secretary of the Department of Horticulture, D. L. Maheshwar, Director, Department of Horticulture, has said.

Mr. Maheshwar was addressing officials at the Department of Horticulture office in Madikeri on Wednesday after visiting the ‘Madhuvana Kendra’ in Bhagamandala in the district.

Honey Park would act as a comprehensive centre for honey production and related activities. It would also endeavour to provide marketing facilities for the product in the entire State, Mr. Maheshwar said.

There is a demand for setting up similar parks in Shimoga, Uttara Kannada and Chikmaglur in view of the potential in those districts. The proposals from those districts were being examined.

In Kodagu, there are ample opportunities for improving honey production a number of institutions, including the Largescale Adivasi Multi-purpose Cooperative Societies (LAMPS), were pursuing apiary in full scale. Since Kodagu has a sizeable tribal population, it is a repository of skills required to pursue apiary and make it economically viable, Mr. Maheshwar said.

The president of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industries, Ballaranda Mani Uthappa, urged officials to encourage people engaged in apiary by providing them beehives. He said several tribal families, who did not have RTCs to claim beehives, had taken up apiary.

The rules must be relaxed to give them the benefits, he said.

Defunct musical fountain

Mr. Maheshwar, who secured details of the musical fountain at the Raja Seat in Madikeri city that has been defunct for over six months, said that he would ask the department officials (who maintain the Raja Seat gardens) to put it back to action or make alternative arrangements, especially in view of the Dasara in the city. Mr. Uthappa also urged Mr. Maheshwar to repair the fountain at the earliest.
