Madikeri: The president of the Coorg Hockey Association (CHA), N.U. Mohan Aiyappa, told presspersons here on Thursday that the association would conduct premier hockey tournaments, including the State “A” Division League, at the newly-laid synthetic surface here.

The CHA would decide dates for the tournaments, in consultation with the Karnataka State Hockey Association (KSHA). The district-level Nestle Kodagu Cup, being held in Kodagu annually, would also be held here in November, he said. The CHA has plans to construct an office at the site where the synthetic turf is housed, Mr. Aiyappa said. Mr. Aiyappa said the entire 5.49 acres of land now housing the SAI hostel and the playing surface, belonged to the CHA. The lands were leased to the CHA by the University of Agricultural Sciences in the 70s for a period of 99 years. The SAI, which proposed to construct a sports complex at the site, would have to obtain the permission of the CHA.

The confusion over using of the turf had been sorted out after meetings conducted with the SAI, Mr. Aiyappa said. SAI has now agreed to allow local players to use the ground.

To regulate the number of players who would use the turf, the CHA would issue identity cards to them.
