The National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the mining scam.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, NCPNR founder-president S.R. Hiremath said it would take not more than four weeks to complete formalities to hand over the matter to the CBI.

It was strange that Mr. Siddaramaiah, who fought against the mining scam when he was the Leader of the Opposition, was unable to take action in this regard. Referring to the action taken by K. Rosaiah, when he was Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2009, Mr. Hiremath said Mr. Rosaiah’s determination had led to a CBI probe into the Obalapuram Mining Company (OMC). Mr. Hiremath said IPS officer Seemath Kumar Singh, who assisted the Reddy brothers when he was the Bellary Superintendent of Police, had been promoted to DIG. The high-level committee appointed by the State government had given a clean chit to IAS officers S.N. Jayaram and Jawaid Akhtar, former deputy commissioners of Bellary. Similarly, politicians like Somashekhar Reddy, and D.K. Shivakumar had gone scot-free, he alleged.
