BANTWAL: A head constable attached to Vittla Police Station was injured when he tried to stop a person from assaulting a government servant on duty at Kolnadu, under station limits near here on Monday.

The policeman, who was shifted to a private hospital in Mangalore, underwent an emergency surgery and is stated to be out of danger. Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda told The Hindu that head constable Raghava and police constable Gopal had accompanied surveyor B.S. Prakash on official request to provide protection.

Mr. Prakash had gone to survey land in dispute between Jayanthi and Monappa Poojary and had issued notices to all concerned including Vittal Shetty as per norms. Vittal Shetty and Girija, his wife, owners of adjoining land who came to the spot when the survey was on reportedly threatened the surveyor. When Vittal Shetty advanced towards Mr. Prakash with a sickle, the latter called out for help. Mr. Raghava, who intervened, was hit on his left shoulder and sustained a compound fracture.

Additional Superintendent of Police B.S. Lokesh Kumar said Girija has been detained and efforts are on to nab Vittal Shetty, who is absconding. A case of attempt to murder (307 IPC), threatening public servant on duty (353, 332, 333 IPC), threatening with dire consequences (504, 506 IPC) and robbery (397 IPC) has been registered.
