A police head constable has been booked on charges of beating up a 38-year-old private firm employee in Subramanyapura on Tuesday night. The incident occurred after the victim demanded a receipt for a fine for smoking in public.

The injured Dinesh, a resident of Gowdarapalya, filed a complaint against the policeman after getting treatment in a private hospital. Dinesh was outside a hotel and smoking when night beat head constable, identified as Siddalingaiah, told him that he violated a rule by smoking in public. Siddalingaiah demanded that Dinesh pay Rs. 200, which Dinesh agreed to do and demanded a receipt. Siddalingaiah refused to give the receipt, which led to a heated argument. In the melee, Siddalingaiah beat up Dinesh while other customers and the hotel staff watched in horror.

Dinesh, who sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment in a private hospital. He received 25 stitches on his face. He lodged a complaint against Siddalingaiah with the Subramanyapura police.
