The 63rd annual convocation of Karnatak University will be held at the Gandhi Bhavan auditorium on the varsity campus here on Friday.

Eight meritorious postgraduate students will receive gold medals from Vice-President Hamid Ansari. Mr. Ansari will also deliver the convocation address. Governor H.R. Bhardwaj will be the chief guest.

Minister for Higher Education C.T. Ravi will be present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the university has dropped the names of film producer Anand Appugol and entrepreneur S.R. Naik from the list of people to be conferred honorary doctorate following the objections raised by the Chancellor’s office.

The others in the list are Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Kharge, actor-turned politician M.H. Ambareesh, and senior librarian K.S. Deshpande.

The proposal to confer honorary doctorate on Mr. Appugol was mired in controversy as it was alleged that the State Credit Cooperative Federation had filed a criminal case against him for being involved in misappropriation of funds to the tune of several crores of rupees.

The misappropriation allegedly took place during Mr. Appugol’s term as chairman of Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna Credit Cooperative Society.

Jayant K.S., a Syndicate member, filed a dissent note and informed the Chancellor’s office about the issue. However, the university is yet to make any formal announcement.
