Over 1,500 students will participate in it

The five-day 28th South Zone Inter-University Youth Festival, ‘Gulfest-2012’, will begin on Saturday on the main campus of the Gulbarga University. Over 1,500 students from 25 universities in South India will participate in the festival.

E.T. Puttaiah, Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, and S.L. Hiremath, Registrar, told presspersons here on Thursday that so far 20 universities, including six from Karnataka, had confirmed their participation. At least five more universities are likely to confirm their participation before the festival was formally inaugurated on December 15.Prof. Puttaiah said that each university would send a team of 40 participants to take part in 26 events. The winners and runners-up in the individual events would qualify for the All-India Inter-University Youth Festival.

The events in which students would be exhibiting their talent include classical vocal solo, elocution, tribal dance, painting, collage, classical instrumental solo (percussion), quiz (written), classical dance, folk orchestra, light vocal (Indian), debates and one-act plays.

He said that the festival was being jointly organised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and Gulbarga University. The participants would be housed in the Sri Guru Vidyapeetha.

He said that judges for the individual events had been selected by the AIU from different States. While the AIU had provided Rs. 10 lakh for the event, Gulbarga University had also earmarked Rs. 10 lakh in its budget. The total estimated expenditure is Rs. 45 lakh; the remainder would be raised through donations from philanthropists and industries in the region.

Already a sum of Rs. 5 lakh had been raised through donations, Prof. Puttaiah said.
