E.T. Puttaiah, Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University and environmental scientist, has been awarded the Best Scientist Award by the National Environmental Science Academy.

The award is presented every year by the academy, in recognition of a person’s contribution to environmental science.

Prof. Puttaiah, who has guided more than 50 research students, was felicitated by students and teachers of the university’s Journalism and Mass Communication Department, here on Thursday.

Baburao Yedrami, president of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists, felicitated Prof. Puttaiah and lauded his contribution to the field.

Head of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department P.K. Khandoba was also felicitated for receiving the Sant Sevalal Award and for his appointment to the Karnataka Media Academy.

Prof. Puttaiah thanked students and staff of the department. He dedicated the award to his Ph.D. students.

Referring to the staff shortage in the department, Prof. Puttaiah said H.R. Bhardwaj, Governor and Chancellor of universities in the State, had approved the filling of 18 teaching posts in nine departments of the varsity. He said the University Grants Commission, in the 11th Plan period, had sanctioned these posts, including two for the Journalism and Mass Communication Department.

He said that a notification inviting applications from candidates for the posts would be published in a couple of days, and the recruitment process would begin in a fortnight. Prof. Puttaiah said that the department, which did not have a permanent building, would be moved to the structure vacated by the Commerce Department in the Social Science Block.

Prof. Khandoba presided over the function. Journalist Subash Banagar made introductory remarks.
