The perseverance and never-say-die attitude of brothers Venkatesh and Pranesh Mudgal finally paid off on Wednesday, as they reached the hot seat of popular television programme “Kaun Banega Crorepathi” (KBC), hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, winning a cash prize of Rs. 12.5 lakh. “We were fifth time lucky,” a beaming Venkatesh Mudgal told The Hindu , referring to their success. His inspiration to participate in KBC was his younger brother Pranesh Mudgal, who missed reaching the hot seat by a whisker in the 2005 edition of KBC. However, Mr. Pranesh Mudgal won Rs. 2 lakh the same day, answering the maximum number of correct answers after failing to make it to the hot seat.
Mr. Pranesh Mudgal who amused Mr. Bachchan with the popular Kannada song “Huttidare Kannadanadinali Huttabeku” sung by the late Kannada filmstar Rajkumar, works as an inspector in the Commercial Taxes Department in Raichur, and Mr. Venkatesh Mudgal works as Assistant Executive Engineer at the Gulbarga University. Mr. Bachchan remarked: “I have great respect for Dr. Rajkumar…he was a great actor.”
“Since 2005, I have been trying to take part in the KBC programme….but the chance eluded me somehow,” Mr. Venkatesh Mudgal said.
He made yet another attempt during the fifth edition of KBC this year and Mr. Mudgal purchased an Idea SIM card especially for the purpose, as he had heard rumours that Idea Cellular customers were preferred by the organisers of the contest.
In the Jodi Special organised by the KBC, Mr. Venkatesh Mudgal's name was selected at random among those who had given the right answer to a question. After passed through the next two hurdles, he was called for an audition in Mumbai, and chose his brother to be his “Jodi” for the final summit.
Finally, on October 10 this year, the episode was shot with the famed Amitabh Bachchan shooting questions to the brothers from Gulbarga.
At the tenth question, the brothers were stuck after exhausting all their lifelines, and walked out with the prize money of Rs. 12.5 lakh.
