SHIMOGA: Part-time and guest lectures of colleges coming under Kuvempu University staged a dharna on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Tuesday, demanding regularisation of services.

In a memorandum to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy and Vice-Chancellor of the Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigara sent through the district administration, the demonstrators alleged that the Government had not been sympathetic towards the plight of the lecturers who had been working for several years without any security and statutory benefits.

Most of the part-time and guest lecturers who had all the basic qualifications laid down by the University Grants Commission had been looking after the departments in several colleges without the support of full-time lecturers, the memorandum said.

The protestors alleged that repeated appeals made to the Government demanding regularisation of their services had not evoked any positive response.

The memorandum said that the part-time and guest lecturers would be forced to intensify their protest if their long-pending demands were not met.

The college teachers demanded that the State Government should stop the practice of promoting high school teachers as lecturers in junior colleges immediately.
