Couple commit suicide

A cloth merchant and his wife committed suicide unable to withstand the loss suffered from their textile showroom. While the cloth merchant hanged himself from the ceiling fan, his wife was found dead in the house in Jai Bharat Nagar near Nandini Layout on Monday night.

The police said V. Balaji (45) and Bhuvaneshwari (38) were running a textile showroom in Ramakrishna Nagar near Jai Bharat Nagar. In a suicide note recovered from the house, Balaji has mentioned that they were committing suicide as they were unable to bear loss suffered in the textile business. Giving the details of loans he has taken, Balaji has asked his relatives to clear the loan by selling the house he had built and also to take care of his two children Satish (20) and Preethi (18), the police said.

A relative of Balaji told The Hindu that the couple had taken loan of Rs. 7 lakh. The creditors might have driven the couple to commit suicide, he said.

The children were sent to a relative’s house to prepare for their exams, the Nandini Layout police said.

On Tuesday morning, Preethi returned to the house and knocked the door. She got curious when her parents did not come out. The frightened girl broke open the window pane with the help of the neighbours and saw her father’s body.
