Minister for Sugar, Small Scale Industries and Muzrai Prakash B. Hukkeri said the State government could consider the request of farmers of villages in Maharashtra along the border of Karnataka to provide water for irrigation.

Talking to presspersons here on Tuesday, he said he was present at a meeting held at Sangli recently, where farmers of 42 villages led by their elected representatives, including Patangrao Kadam, requested the Karnataka government to provide water from the Indi sub-canal for irrigation.

Water sharing

He suggested the Chief Ministers of Maharashtra and Karnataka work out a system of water sharing through a “give and take” policy. Maharashtra could release 2 to 2.5 tmcft of water from Koyana during summer to thre northern districts of Karnataka and the latter could reciprocate the gesture suitably, he said.
