Bangalore: Governor Rameshwar Thakur faced the wrath of the Opposition for not implementing his assurance to sugarcane farmers three months ago.
During his address to the joint session of the legislature on Friday, Janata Dal (Secular) members, including the former Ministers H.D. Revanna, Bandeppa Kashempur, Basavaraj Horatti and Umesh Katti and the former Minister Prakash Hukkeri of the Congress stood up and demanded remunerative prices for sugarcane. They shouted slogans while the Governor was reading out his speech.
After a few minutes, they rushed to the well of the House and staged a dharna. They said that Mr. Thakur had given an assurance to farmers that the Government would pay a support price of Rs. 160 for a tonne of sugarcane, but had not implemented it. “How can you now make more promises to farmers now when you have failed to keep your promise of giving relief to the farmers,” they asked.
After some time, they withdrew their protest and returned to their seats.
