A.K. Padmanabhan, president of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has urged the Union and State governments to ensure continuance of the public distribution system and an end to privatisation of public sector undertakings.

He was addressing presspersons on the concluding day of the three-day State-level CITU convention in Sirsi on Tuesday. He stressed the need for creating more employment opportunities and revising the minimum monthly wages to Rs.10, 000.

He said that people were feeling the heat of price rise and rising unemployment due to pro-liberalisation policies. He said 11 trade unions of the country and some other organisations had called for a general strike on February 20 and 21.
