‘Stadiums and sports schools to come up in districts’
M.P. Appachu Ranjan, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, has said that the government plans to establish a university for sports in the State.
He was addressing a gathering after releasing Suvarna Siri, a souvenir to mark the golden jubilee celebrations of Chettalli High School in Somwarpet taluk in Kodagu. Full-fledged stadiums and sports schools too would be opened in a phased manner in all districts, Mr. Ranjan said.
He reiterated the intention of the government to open a hockey academy in Kodagu.
The government had provided Rs. 13 crore to Kodagu in recent years to develop sports infrastructure, including construction of an indoor stadium and sprucing up the Genral K.S. Thimayya Stadium in Madikeri.
Meanwhile, M.C. Nanaiah, MLC, suggested that the government should make it compulsory to have playgrounds in the State, instead of setting up a sports university. Encroachments should be cleared from school grounds and fundamental sports facilities ensured in every school, Mr. Nanaiah said.
K.G. Bopaiah, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, who is also a former student of Chettalli High School, said that teachers should identify talent in students and nurture them.
People who donated their land to set up the school and retired teachers were felicitated.
Periyana Jayananda, president, school management committee; Ballaranda Mani Uthappa, president, Kodagu Zilla Panchayat standing committee on agriculture and industry; and Mullanda Sunny Aiyappa, president, Chettalli gram panchayat, were present.
