Belgaum:Voter-response to elections to the gram panchayat in Belgaum district evoked good response with nearly 80 per cent polling registered on Wednesday, according to preliminary reports reaching the district headquarters.

Barring a few incidents of verbal duel between supporters of rival contestants, polling was by and large peaceful.

The voters in Nirvanahatti boycotted polling.

Official sources in the district election office said that polling, as per preliminary reports, was the highest in Chikkodi.

Belgaum taluk recorded the lowest percentage.

The following is the percentage recorded in the taluks: Chikkodi 91, Raibag 90.50, Ramdurg 89.36, Gokak 86.93, Bailhongal 85.24, Khanapur 82, Savadatti 81, Hukkeri 80, Athani 79 and Belgaum 66.51.
