Chitradurga: Providing sex education to young teachers before they start teaching young children has become imperative, critic and lecturer B. P. Virendra Kumar said. Mr. Kumar, delivering a special lecture on Teachers’ Day celebrations organised by the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat and the Department of Public Instruction here on Saturday referred to media reports of several teachers being involved in the sexually harassment of students, said newly-recruited and young teachers should be first trained on how to behave with their pupil.
“In the absence of proper guidance and counselling, many teachers commit such mistakes and often fail to control their inner urges,” he said.
With regard to reports of international universities coming up in the country, Prof. Kumar said he feared that this would deprive poor students of higher education as these universities would focus on rich students in order to get enough funds.
Reflection upon the present education system, he said that he hoped that there would be a day when people would prefer admission in government schools over private schools to admit their children.
“People should not feel that government schools are inferior to private schools,” he said.
“In my opinion, students of Government schools are more secular than any private school because in the government schools you study alongside students of all castes and creeds”, he stated.
Prof. Kumar also regretted the current teaching scenario, in which many people opted for teaching not out of choice but out of compulsion, “Teaching is a noble profession, it is not merely a Government job.”
S.K. Basavarajan, MLA, advised the teachers to stay away from bad habits which would blemish the reputation of their noble profession. He also urged officials not to harass teachers which in turn would hamper their working.
On the occasion, several teachers were awarded for their performances and retired teachers were felicitated.
Deputy Director Public Instruction Department, K. Shankarappa, Block Education Officer Hanumantarayappa and zilla panchayat president and members were present.
