MANGALORE: Members of Odanadi Seva Samsthe and Child Welfare Committee, Dakshina Kannada, rescued five girls who were being forced to work in plantations and houses in Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday. Mahadevaiah K.N., project coordinator of Odanadi Seva Samsthe, who coordinated the rescue efforts, told presspersons here on Wednesday that they were ill-treated by their respective employers and not paid any wages as promised to them.

The girls said they were beaten up by their employers frequently and made to work without break for several hours.

Mr. Mahadevaiah said Odanadi came to know about the missing girls, most of them from impoverished Jenukuruba tribe when they conducted a legal awareness camp for the tribals. — Staff Correspondent
