Director of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Department D. Chandrashekar has urged entrepreneurs to get barcode and ISO certification for their products.
Speaking at a workshop on ‘Sensitisation of barcode and ISO for MSME’ jointly organised by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Thursday, Mr. Chandrashekar said when compared to south Karnataka, the response for getting barcode and ISO certification on products was very poor in north Karnataka.
“The Union government has earmarked enough funds to provide incentives for entrepreneurs to get barcode and ISO certification for their products. Entrepreneurs should make use of this facility,” he said. Mr. Chandrashekar said it was imperative for all industries to have their own barcodes.
“Barcodes would have all information about the product and company,” he added.
Mr. Chandrashekar said bar-coding could have significant impact on the success of the product and company. Entrepreneurs would have to register with Global Standard One (GS1) to get barcodes for their products. The number provided on the barcode issued by GS1 was completely unique, he said.
The department provides 75 per cent of the registration charge with GS1 as incentive to MSMEs and also reimburses 75 per cent of the annual renewal sum, Mr. Chandrashekar said.
Apart from this, the department reimburses 75 per cent expenditure incurred by entrepreneurs in getting the ISO-9000 certificates, Mr. Chandrashekar added.
