Geeta Basavaraj, representing Shrirampur constituency in Hosadurga taluk, and K. Dyamanna of Aimangala constituency in Hiriyur taluk, were on Saturday elected president and vice-president of the Chitradurga zilla panchayat respectively for the remaining 20 months.
Ms. Basavaraj is from the Congress and Mr. Dyamanna is from the Janata Dal (Secular). Of the 34 zilla panchayat members, 22 voted in favour of Ms. Basavaraj and 12 in favour of Marakka of the BJP representing Bommagondanahalli. For the vice-president’s post, 22 members voted in favour of Mr. Dyamanna and 12 in favour of Shivkumar of the BJP.
Addressing mediapersons after the election, Ms. Basavaraj said that priority would be given to easing the drinking water scarcity, improving sanitation and providing adequate fodder and drinking water to cattle.
Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri, zilla panchayat chief executive officer Narayanaswamy and Superintendent of Police M.N. Nagaraj were present.
