Chitradurga: Gausia Banu and Rudrani of the Janata Dal (Secular) have been elected president and vice president respectively of the City Municipal Council.
Speaking to presspersons after the elections here on Monday, JD(S) leader S.K. Basavarajan said the decision to field the two women was taken at a party meeting held recently.
He said the JD(S) had 17 seats in the 35-member council. With the inclusion of three independent candidates, the party’s strength rose to 20.
Mr. Basavarajan said the party’s primary responsibility was to maintain cleanliness and focus on the city’s development. In the absence of elected representatives, people were finding it difficult to get civic issues redressed. But now, as the party was in charge of affairs, people could get their problems solved, he added. B.T. Channabasappa, MLC, who was present, echoed similar sentiments.
To a question, he said the JD(S) had not suffered a blow after senior party leader Tippeswamy joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. When asked who would replace Mr. Tippeswamy as leader of the Nayak community, Mr. Channabasappa said the party had several equally popular Nayak leaders in the district. “In fact, after his joining the BJP, the JD(S) has gained more strength in Challakere, which he represented, as many people of his own community were unhappy with his decision,” he said.
‘Will stick on’
On his future political loyalties, he said he would remain in the JD(S).
