Over 10 lakh students will be appearing for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this year, which is almost 15 per cent more than the number that wrote the exam in 2012.

The all-India exam will be conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) online for 16 streams on January 20 and offline for six streams on February 10.

The results will be announced on March 15.

According to a press release issued by IIT, New Delhi, in March 2012, 7.7 lakh students had registered for GATE 2012 and 6.86 lakh candidates appeared for the exam.

The total number of candidates who qualified in GATE 2012 is 1.08 lakh.

Exempted

This year, women candidates have been exempted from paying the application fee, according to a press release, and 13 public sector undertakings (PSUs) have issued recruitment notifications based on GATE 2013 scores.
