`Festivals develop love and respect among communities'

KARWAR: Karavali Utsav, a four-day cultural festival, was inaugurated at the Rabindranath Tagore beach here on Friday.

Inaugurating the festival, Yakshagana artiste and president of Yakshagana and Janapada Academy underlined the relevance of such festivals.

He said festivals such as this help overcome the monotony of life. Festivals develop mutual love and respect among communities.

He said coastal regions play an important part in the development of a country not just through trade and commerce but culturally also. In the past cultural exchanges between countries were carried out primarily from coastal regions. The British and the Portuguese first settled on the coast before ruling India for centuries. It is necessary to strengthen coastal regions socially, culturally and economically. Festivals such as the Karavali Utsav can help in this direction.
