Four officials of the zilla panchayat, including an executive engineer (in charge) of the Panchayat Raj engineering division, have been placed under suspension on charge of misuse of funds meant for the total sanitation programme.

The names of the suspended officers are D. Venkataramana, executive engineer; Venkataraju and Parashuram, assistant engineers; and Pompaiah if the accounts section. The Government has initiated action against these officials. During the three-day celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the coronation of Sri Krishnadevaraya in Hampi, the authorities had set up mobile toilets for seven days. The rent paid to the Bangalore-based Sara Plast, who supplied the mobile toilets, was Rs. 24 lakh.

As per the norms, tenders should have been called for setting up 80 mobile toilets since the estimated cost of the project was more than Rs. 1 lakh. However, the contract had been awarded directly to Sara Plast.

Enquiries revealed that Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas, who was holding the additional charge as chief executive officer of zilla panchayat, had found some discrepancies and reported it to the Government. Besides, the rent for the mobile toilets had been paid from the total sanitation programme funds.
