DHARWAD: Four persons, including the former MLA and the BJP candidate Shivaraj Sajjanar and the Congress candidate Srinivas Mane, filed their nomination papers for the byelection to the Legislative Council from local bodies here on Tuesday.

Tuesday was the last day for filing nomination papers.

Mr. Sajjanar, accompanied by Ministers including C.M. Udasi and Basavaraj Bommai, filed three sets of nomination papers. Scores of his supporters accompanied him to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, the venue for filing nomination papers. The enthusiastic supporters broke through the security cover and rushed inside the meeting hall of the office where Mr. Sajjanar was filing his papers. They even stood on the table and the chair on which the District Magistrate sits while hearing cases, to witness the event.

Mr. Mane, who was accompanied by MLA Santosh Lad, among others, filed two sets of nomination papers. Chandragouda S. Bhoomanagoudar filed nomination papers as an independent candidate, while Basanagouda Hanamanthagouda Desai filed two sets of nomination papers — one as an independent candidate and the other as the Janata Dal (Secular) candidate.
