J.S. Gunjal, a retired District and Sessions Judge, and father of Justice Ajit J. Gunjal, a former Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, passed away here on Sunday.

J.S. Gunjal, who started his profession as an advocate in Dharwad in 1938, served as Assistant and Additional Sessions Judge, and as a District and Sessions Judge.

After retirement, he started practicing in the High Court.

The Karnataka State Government appointed him in 1969 as Special Public Prosecutor to conduct a murder case in which 20 people were burnt alive in a house.

He is survived by five children and great grandchildren.
