DHARWAD: Folklore expert T.N. Shankaranarayana has said that folk art forms played a major role in the freedom struggle.

Delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of a three-day national workshop on “Folklore and Communication” at Karnatak University here on Friday, Mr. Shankaranarayana said that folk arts had a great role in spreading awareness on fighting for social justice.

However, he said that it was regrettable that some money-minded people had degraded the value of folk literature.

Another folklore expert, Basavaraj Malashetty, said that political parties had made use of folk art forms for publicity and for personal benefits, thereby degrading its value.
