The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will henceforth focus more on establishing playgrounds across the city rather than parks.
This was decided at review meeting of BBMP's Horticulture and Forest departments on Wednesday. At the meeting, Mayor Sharadamma Ramanjaneya, Deputy Mayor S. Harish and Commissioner Siddaiah also decided to merge the two departments and cancel the additional posts.
Speaking to presspersons later, Ms. Sharadamma said parks would be created only if there is more than half an acre of land available. Also, landscaping would not be allowed. Instead, the stress would be on forming tree parks.
Officials have been directed to ensure all parks have rainwater harvesting systems in place, besides making provision for percolation and composting pits. All parks must have at least one public toilet and one watchman shed. Security of parks would now be the responsibility of the Horticulture Department, officials were told.
Ms. Sharadamma added that it was decided in the meeting to allocate at least 20 per cent of the ward grants towards rainwater harvesting in public places and public offices. BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah is understood to have committed to providing matching grants for the same.
Deputy Mayor Harish said that stress would also be given to scientific pruning of trees.
